On Thursday 19.10.23 the Ukrainian parliament voted overwhelmingly in favour of a law that will make it possible to ban the ortodx church. In order to become law, the proposal has to be backed in a second reading and approved by the president.
267 deputies voted in favour of the law, while 15 deputies voted against it.
The names of all the deputies who voted in favour of the law is not easily available if one does not master Ukrainian. Here is a list of how many parliamentarians voted in favour of the law, by party affiliation:
- Servant of the People – 175
- European Solidarity – 26
- Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) – 17
- Platform for Life and Peace – 1
- For the future – 8
- Holos (Voice) – 18
- Trust – 12
- Restoration of Ukraine – 0
Some deputies have voiced their support for the new law. Member of parlament Inna Sovsun wrote the following on Facebook after the vote:
“So far this is only a first reading, but still a historic decision. … . It is extremely important to me to put an end to the (Russian Orthodox Church) activities in Ukraine.”
Another member of parlament, Iryna Herashchenko, also called the vote historic and described it as a first step to remove “Moscow priests from the Ukrainian land” (source: The Guardian).
